For a month leading up to BlizzCon 2019, the internet had plenty of rumors about the upcoming sequel to Blizzard’s hero shooter. This weekend these rumors were confirmed and Blizzard has officially unveiled Overwatch 2 which, according to the team, aims to ‘redefine what the sequel means’.
The main thing you should know about Overwatch 2 is the new focus on PvE content. According to Blizzard, the team behind the game had a lot of joy developing the story of the game throughout the years and introducing multiple animated shorts, in-game events and so on. This inspired the creators to make a sequel that has plenty of modes for those who are not that interested in PvP.
Overwatch 2 will feature a new story campaign that will consist of various different co-op missions featuring different Overwatch 2 characters. Each new mission will have intro and outro cinematics which will make storytelling of the game more streamlined. In addition, Blizzard has revealed that the game will have replayable hero missions designed for specific characters. This new focus on PvE will also include new character customization. By playing through story and hero missions, you’ll level up your heroes and unlock new talents allowing you to customize certain abilities.
PvP is still present in Overwatch 2. With Overwatch 2, Blizzard introduced a new PvP mode called ‘Push” which will be the first-ever new PvP mode since the release of the original game. However, in order to play it, you won’t need to buy the new game. Overwatch 2 features an unexpected crossover with the first game. Blizzard confirmed that every new hero, map and game mode for PvP will also be released on the original Overwatch game.
Furthermore, the game will support cross-play multiplayer across Overwatch and Overwatch 2, so if you’re not interested in a new PvE gameplay, you can play the original Overwatch with the rest of the community. Overwatch 2 will also keep all of your progress achieved in the first game. It will include your account level, rank, and all the unlocked cosmetics.
We don’t know about you guys, but all of this news makes us super excited. From what we gather, Overwatch 2 will keep its original character roster, will add a bunch of new ones, and will keep the gameplay intact. More defined and sharper look, more new content – same awesome gameplay. Could we even ask for more from such an all-out sequel?
Overwatch 2 is announced for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. However, there’s no release date as of yet.
