The most recent conclusion of The Game Awards 2019 marks the end of the year as far as gaming is concerned. 2020 is merely weeks away and with the upcoming year, we will see plenty of new, ambitious releases. Until then, the announcement of The Game Awards 2019 winners can serve as a chance to take a retrospective look back at all the great games that released this year. 2019 was rich and generous in terms of its gaming releases so here are some honorable mentions which also include various winners and nominees of The Game Awards 2019.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice 

Starting with the winner of Game of the Year award, among the best games 2019 brought to the table is the action-adventure title Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice developed by FromSoftware, creators behind the Souls series. This third-person action-adventure features a feudal Japan setting but doesn’t shy away from various fantasy elements. The shinobi protagonist of the game wields a prosthetic arm which opens awesome gameplay mechanics like vertical movement with a grappling hook. Tactical combat, gory executions, rewarding victories – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice masterfully expands upon features characteristic to FromSoftware titles.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Speaking about Souls-like games, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is another great example as well as being one of the best games 2019 saw the release of. It‘s been years since the gaming industry saw a Star Wars game of this level. EA has put the Star Wars license to good use by having Respawn Entertainment working on the Fallen Order. Narrative of the game leans towards the spirit of the Star Wars Original Trilogy by featuring a touching journey of a young hero trying to rebuild his connection with the Force. Resident Evil 2 Remake

Resident Evil 2 is without a doubt one of the best games 2019 has witnessed. It‘s no wonder the title was nominated for the Game of the Year award. Not often do the remakes live up to the games they‘re based on but Resident Evil 2 (2019) lived up to the hype and even outsold the original! The game is characterized by tasteful mix between horror and action, interesting puzzles, great replay value through two campaigns featuring different characters and the scarce ammunition always keeps the players on their toes and think twice before leaping into combat. This is exactly what a Resident Evil game should be.

The Outer Worlds 

One of the best games 2019 provided, especially if you‘re a fan of sci-fi RPGs like Mass Effect, TV shows like Firefly or anime series like Cowboy Bebop. We are, of course, talking about The Outer Worlds. The game was nominated for the best narrative award this year, and even though it lost to Disco Elysium, it still deserves an honorable mention. This space western was developed by Obsidian Entertainment,  the studio behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Fallout: New Vegas and the latest game most definitely deserves to be among the pantheon of these legends.

Apex Legends

If we‘re going to discuss legends, then it would be a crime to miss Apex Legends. Who could‘ve thought that one of the best games 2019 will have to offer and a winner of the best multiplayer award is going to be another battle royale? Not to mention that it‘s the second game on this list coming from Respawn Entertainment, along with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Apex Legends revitalized the battle royale genre at the beginning of the year. It‘s a great, versatile sci-fi first-person shooter featuring a lot of parkour mechanics from Titanfall series, as both games are set in the same fictional universe and on top of it all, it‘s free to play!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 

The latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise – Modern Warfare – was also nominated for best multiplayer but it secured its place among the best games (2019) with it winning the award for the best audio design. Call of Duty Moder Warfare could be considered a reboot of the Modern Warfare titles which were extremely popular and influential at the beginning of the current decade and are still held up high among the gamers. The campaign doesn‘t continue the story of Modern Warfare 3 but it nevertheless features iconic characters like Captain Price, while the multiplayer mode saw the return of the fan beloved gameplay elements and classic killstreak rewards.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 

Best games (2019) also include the winner of the Best Family game, which was Luigi’s Mansion 3, released exclusively for Nintendo Switch. Once again Mario’s brother had his chance to shine as a cowardly hero in a fun, kid-friendly third iteration of this series. Joined by his jelly clone Gooigi, the silly plumber arms himself with an upgraded Poltergust G-00 equipment and faces the supernatural forces that kidnapped his friends. The creative level design of the haunted hotel, interesting puzzles, well-made co-op mode and all other features we already covered in our blog rightfully puts Luigi’s Mansion 3 among the best games 2019 had to offer.

FIFA 20

In The Game Awards 2019 the newest game in the long-running football franchise – FIFA 20 – was nominated for the best game in the sports-racing category. The award itself went to a racing game Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled but FIFA 20 also shouldn’t go without recognition considering its capacity to expand upon the gameplay features of its predecessors and offers tons of content both in single-player and multiplayer modes. FIFA 20 has something for everyone, both those who seek to engage the field personally and those who prefer to manage their football club from afar.

Football Manager 2020

One of the best games 2019 gave us focuses exclusively on football club management as the title Football Manager 2020 already implies. There’s no better choice for a game if you’re a passionate football fan and you believe you would have what it takes to rightfully manage your club, given the right resources. That is exactly the experience Football Manager 2020 puts on the table, as you’ll select your base of operations, sign contracts, look for competent staff and develop your own empire in the harsh and competitive football industry.

Destiny 2 (winner of best community support)

Even though the game was released in 2017, Destiny 2 launched on PC this year and through this release, it eventually became one of the best games 2019 game awards had included. Destiny 2 was nominated for and won the title for the best community support. The online-only FPS with RPG elements coming from the original creators of the infamous Halo franchise is completely free to play on Steam. However, there’s a lot of great purchasable Destiny 2 content such as the Shadowkeep expansion which is definitely worth attention.

Borderlands 3

Comparisons between Destiny games and the Borderlands series are not uncommon, as they serve as great alternatives to each other. Despite the differences in tone and style, both games are first-person shooters with an RPG twist and an abundance of loot rewards. Just like Destiny 2, Borderlands 3 is featured in the best games 2019 awards, with it being nominated for the best action-adventure and best multiplayer categories. Borderlands 3 continued upon successfully expanding the trademark characteristics of the series: an abundance of loot, fun FPS combat, beautiful animation-style graphics and a great sense of humor.  

Devil May Cry 5

There were some amazing action games released in 2019: Apex Legends; Astral Chain; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare; Metro: Exodus; Gears 5 which were all nominees for the best action game category but at the end of it all nothing toped Devil May Cry 5. In the action category, the fifth installment of this series secured itself among the best games 2019 spoiled us with. An elaborated combat system that includes killing enemies with stunts, a plethora of distinct weaponry and fighting styles, great replay value switching between characters of Dante, Nero, and V – all these elements create an action title like no other in 2019.
