One of the most successful indies in recent years – Darkest Dungeon is getting a sequel. The developers released a new trailer called “A Glimmer of Hope” which features our first look at the game as well as the official Early Access release date. Darkest Dungeon 2 Early Access should become available on Epic Games Store sometime in 2021.

If you were spooked by the fact that the game is choosing Epic Games Store for its Early Access, don’t be alarmed. As soon as fans started to share their disappointment that Darkest Dungeon 2 will be another Epic Games Store exclusive, Red Hook Studios shared a Tweet saying that the full game will also launch on other PC storefronts. However, no word about any console versions yet…

While many fans expected Darkest Dungeon 2 to be somewhat similar to its predecessor, developers decided to upgrade the old 2D concept and introduce something new. Apparently, Darkest Dungeon 2 characters will feature 3D models, meaning that we can hope for some fresh new looks in the upcoming game.

The description on Red Hook’s webpage states:

“Our familiar companions band together for another journey into oblivion – this time in stylized 3d!  In fact, this teaser was captured straight out of Unity, and uses the in-game character models and rendering techniques from the game itself.  With a refined combat system and a whole new metagame, Darkest Dungeon II is packed with fresh monsters, bosses, and challenges.”

If you’ve never heard about Darkest Dungeon, all you need to know that it’s a superb indie RPG that was first released back in 2016. In the game, the player has to manage a roster of characters while exploring various dungeons below a gothic mansion. The game does a very good job mixing real-time movement and turn-based combat – all flavored with a very interesting stress mechanic. Characters sustaining high-stress levels can gain afflictions that will hamper, or possibly enhance their performance, making players juggle between characters.
