We must be honest – we were not expecting any new announcements from Blizzard until BlizzCon 2019. However, we’re happy that we were wrong. Blizzard’s MOBA Heroes of the Storm is getting a hefty update and introduces a new hero coming to the Nexus. Warcraft’s big bad dragon Deathwing is ready to incinerate all that would dare to oppose him.
If you’re not a fan of Blizzard, you might need a short introduction into the lore of Warcraft. Deathwing was one of the dragon aspects of Azeroth until he was corrupted by the whispers of the Old God. Previously an Aspect of Earth and protector of the world, Deathwing became the big bad of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm expansion.
He’s gonna be big (and bad) in Heroes of the Storm as well. According to what we’ve seen so far, Deathwing will be way bigger than the other Heroes of the Storm’s dragon aspect, Alexstrasza. However, unlike Alexstrasza, Deathwing won’t have a human form. Adam Jackson, the Heroes of the Storm live game designer said this:
“He’s going to be a giant dragon the whole game. So no human form. Think Alexstrasza and then a little big bigger — but all the time.”
Deathwing will traverse the map with his ‘Z’ ability called Dragonflight. Upon landing on the map again it has two ways of fighting enemies – Destroyer form will be for melee combat and World Breaker form will allow you to attack enemies from a certain range.
Deathwing’s Heroic (R) ability is called Cataclysm. It will allow Deathwing to fly across the targeted path, deal damage on impact, and then leave a scorched trail that will further damage the enemy players for a short duration.
It sounds simple, but it looks and feels really cool. If you have some minutes to spare, we suggest you check Deathwing in action in this lengthy Deathwing deep dive video.
Lastly, we want to express our excitement about the upcoming BlizzCon 2019 and what the near future holds for Heroes of the Storm. Usually, these types of hero announcements are saved for the event, but the pre-event arrival might mean that the development team holds even bigger news for the live stage.
