After the release of Mortal Kombat 11 more and more rumors regarding the Mortal Kombat movie began spreading. It seems that, after all, they were true since Warner Bros has announced that it will be rebooting their movie released in 1995. Additionally, there’s already an official release date – mark your calendars for the 5th of March, 2021.
The new Mortal Kombat movie project already has a writer and director. The movie script will be written by Greg Russo who is a new face in the cinema business. Greg is also writing scripts for Resident Evil reboot, Death Note 2, Saints Row, and F.E.A.R. movie adaptations. Australian director Simon McQuoid is also involved. He’s known for directing video game commercials.
According to reports, Mortal Kombat movie reboot boasts quite a significant budget which is around 35 million euros. Sources say that the new movie will tell the same tale as the original, however, the production will change a couple of things, to update and upgrade the classic.
While the original movie wasn’t that great, it quickly became a cult classic. Mortal Kombat 1995 can be considered as one of the first video game movies that laid the groundwork for others. It had plenty of nods to the entire video game franchise, but time wasn’t kind for it. If you’ve had to watch the movie nowadays, you might be put off by many of its shortcomings – acting, CG, etc. However, it’s still considered as the greatest video game movie of all time.
