In case you were wondering about the latest console generation and the most successful games for each console, we have you covered. Apparently, during this console generation, Xbox One struggled to find its flagship game, so Sea of Thieves took over. A new blog post by the developers confirmed that, since the game’s launch in 2018, more than 10 million people played the game thus making it “the most successful new IP from Xbox this generation”. It’s quite the feat…
While it’s a really bold claim, we cannot argue that it’s wrong. Sea of Thieves had an explosive launch and managed to gather 5 million players in just a few months. However, the game never slowed down and managed to surpass 10 million unique players milestone. The number is a sum of people who bought the game on console and PC and played it using their Xbox Game Pass.
To mark the occasion Rare’s Executive Producer Joe Neate shared a new post on Xbox’s website:
“We’re excited and humbled to share that Sea of Thieves has now been played by more than ten million players, reinforcing its status as the most successful new IP from Xbox this generation.
It’s mind-blowing to think of that many people setting sail on the Sea of Thieves, and it’s all been made possible by the support and passion of our fantastic community.
For everyone at Rare, the Sea of Thieves community represents the very best of what gaming can be. It’s home to players from more than eighty different countries, bringing together gamers on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox One and Windows 10 PC and creating countless stories and moments that people can treasure. Seeing these stories shared through social media or other community spaces is something that inspires the team every day. To every person who’s played Sea of Thieves, thank you.”
However, Rare decided to thank Sea of Thieves players not only by word but also by giving them some more in-game goodies. Next week, Sea of Thieves will receive a new January update called Legends of the Seas. This update will be free to everyone who owns the game and will spotlight Legendary players with some cool new easter eggs. It will also feature two limited-edition gifts – a free custom sail and a special emote. Here’s some more info about everything coming with this update:
If you’ve never played Sea of Thieves it’s about time you join this pirate MMO. How would you be able to explain yourself if you miss the most successful Xbox IP of the generation?
