The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the monster hunter Geralt has become a video game icon who even transcended the realities of gaming into the hit Netflix series and various comic books. Though his origin can be traced back to The Witcher novels, gamers know Geralt of Rivia from the generation-defining action RPG series that changed many aspects of gaming. Wild Hunt reformed how we perceive side quests and minor NPC characters. It showed that the main storyline isn’t and shouldn’t be the only focus of a video game and set an example of how open worlds should be crafted going forward.
A minor side quest, an NPC you encounter may not seem much, but the decisions you make and dialogue options you choose can impact and change the details of the world itself. If you’ve by chance managed to visit the quest location before starting the quest, Geralt will mention it through dialogue. With attention to detail, small nuances, and a world that feels alive, CDPR has genuinely crafted a game of a generation.
God of War
God of War did many things right, but mainly it showed how to revive a franchise that fans thought to be completed and forgotten. It seemed that God of War III has finished telling the story of Kratos and the God of War was gone and retired. Or so we thought. Santa Monica Studios has resurrected Kratos and brought the Ghost of Sparta into a new Norse setting where he moved on and left the tragedy we’ve experienced in the previous trilogy behind. The developers not only thought of a new chapter for Kratos but also changed the God of War formula and gameplay mechanics.
The camera shifted to the behind-the-back perspective and became a one, continuous and unbreakable shot in both cinematics and real-time gameplay which was also a huge achievement in gaming. The throwable Leviathan ax and quick switch to hand-to-hand combat have revolutionized how we perceive video game weapons and opened more possibilities to experiment with combat and combos. If you haven’t yet picked up God of War, now’s the time to do it. And don’t worry, you don’t have to play the previous trilogy.
Forza Horizon 5
Forza Horizon 5 has left its mark as the biggest game start in the history of Xbox. The racing franchise is beloved by car nerds and casual racing enthusiasts alike. Back in the day racing genre was dominated by various racing franchises, sadly, today many of them are buried beneath the sands of time. Need for Speed which was once the pinnacle of the genre is struggling to find its footing and the developers of various racing franchises have long moved to different projects. Though the racing genre is not dying a dying breed, finding an adequate racing game is getting harder. However, the Forza series continues to deliver the top-tier experience and improve with each passing title. It is considered one of the best arcade racing franchises on the current market.
Forza Horizon 5 invites racers to participate in a racing festival throughout the entirety of Mexico which welcomes car enthusiasts with various biomes and ecosystems. Lush jungles, scorched deserts, snowy mountain peaks, volcanoes, high-speed highways, small Latin towns, and forgotten ancient ruins span the landscape of Mexico, all of which can be explored and raced in.
