Well, that happened… If you’re an avid gamer and have been following the news lately (or the whole Twitter shitstorm brewing throughout yesterday), you might know that Xbox hosted another Inside Xbox stream. It was titled as a “First Look Xbox Series X Gameplay” and the fans received anything but gameplay.
Microsoft and Xbox had no trouble marketing their event as the next-gen gameplay reveal but as soon as the live event started, fans quickly understood that ‘gameplay’ is just Xbox’s way of saying ‘engine graphics’. Naturally, this sparked viewer’s dissatisfaction, and the streaming video on YouTube was downvoted fairly quickly. It currently stands 50-50 as with likes and dislikes ratio, but some commentators already noticed that the video has less dislikes then previously, sparking a new theory about dislike pruning. In addition to all of this, there was a huge flood of Twitter memes under hashtags #XboxSeriesX #gameplay.
So, that’s how you load a gun and shoot yourself in the foot without any reason. We doubt that there would be any backlash at all if the event was marketed as Xbox Series X games reveal without the need to attach gameplay keyword when clearly 2/3 of the reveals weren’t featuring true gameplay… But now here we are and as we all came to learn – the internet never forgets.
Don’t get us wrong. The game reveals were great! We saw a bunch of cool games like Dirt 5, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Madden NFL 21, Scarlet Nexus, The Ascent, and others to get us hyped up about the console. But games suddenly became a secondary topic. So we, like the rest of the gaming community, are a bit disappointed with Microsoft and their malicious marketing practices. We can only hope that Microsoft learned their lesson.
Xbox Series X should come out this year, during the holiday season.
