Godot Free Game Engine Gets a Maintenance Update

Free and open source game engine Godot updated to version 4.4 at the start of March, 2025 and now it’s rolled out its first big maintenance update. Game devs, or gamers interested in trying their hand at being one, can rest assured that the engine has had well over 100 fixes so now works better than ever.

Godot 4.4.1 was worked on by a staggering 58 contributors, who made around 125 fixes in total. Some of these are minor tweaks, but there were also a few big issues brought to light with version 4.4.

“Since then, we’ve started the development phase for Godot 4.5 at full speed (with a first dev snapshot released last week!), but we also put our main focus on fixing remaining and newly reported regressions that affect users who upgraded to 4.4,” the main developers said on the official Godot website.

“A few of these issues can be showstoppers for affected users, so we decided to release a 4.4.1 maintenance release as soon as possible.”

Main Fixes

One of the biggest issues was potential security vulnerabilities for games that use networking via TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocols. This has been addressed in the 4.4.1 update, as well as the addition of ASTC HDR format variants for graphic rendering.

This latter issue was of special annoyance to mobile developers, as ASTC HDR is the only compressed format available on Android devices so now it’s covered, mobile games should look a lot better.

Road to Vostok is just one of the prominent titles being made in Godot.

Another graphics fix involves 2D shaders. If devs tried to access TEXTURE_PIXEL_SIZE in a light shader, it was prone to crashing. 2D shader instance parameters have also been fixed to avoid crashes, so games made with these should run a lot smoother now.

Waiting For Godot 4.5

Other fixes involve things such as better implementation of Jolt physics (considered far superior to Godot’s default physics) and mouse issues on iOS devices. The Godot developers encourage any users to report anything else they notice but state that there are currently no known compatibility issues with 4.4 projects.

Version 4.5 is currently being worked on, with the latest development news released on March 20, 2025. The stable 4.4.1 update is available for download now for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Editor, occasional game dev, constant dad, horror writer, noisy musician. I love games that put effort into fun mechanics, even if there’s a bit of jank here and there. I’m also really keen on indie dev news. My first experience with video games was through the Game and Watch version of Donkey Kong, because I’m older than I look.
