Microsoft Gift Gamers an AI Copilot

AI entering the daily life of gamers took one step closer to becoming reality on Mar. 13, 2025, when Xbox Corporate Vice President of Gaming AI, Fatima Kardar, and Vice President of Next Generation, Jason Ronald, sat down together to discuss Copilot for an official Xbox podcast on YouTube.

Copilot is a free AI tool to assist gamers with basically everything. From its initial deployment through to its eventual use across different devices, Copilot is being presented as something that can help gamers without becoming a nuisance.

“Copilot in the context of Xbox has to be about gameplay,” said Kardar. “It has to be personalized to you, the way that you like to play, and it should be able to kind of get further in gaming, be your companion, and help connect you with families and communities.”

“AI is going to be there and you can chat with it, and it can trash talk you if that’s what you need,” she added.

AI to Point You in The Right Direction

Copilot is also being touted as something gamers, especially newer ones, can turn to for things like game suggestions and help. This includes reminding players of parts of games they may have missed, like side quests, or even suggesting certain character builds or options the player might like to try.

Speaking with Ethan Rothmel, the podcast host, Jason Ronald highlighted how the AI can also augment its suggestions based on how gamers play.

“You and I may play the same game, but we play them fundamentally different. I might be a tank. You might be a healer,” Ronald said. “Or even think about a game like Forza, where it’s like maybe I actually prefer to drive in this style of car versus this style of car. So just really having an assistant who can actually help me understand how to just have more fun based on how I choose to play other games.”

A Polite Copilot

Gamers might worry about having an AI always hanging around, watching and listening, and possibly interrupting gameplay at a pivotal moment. Kardar said it was important that Copilot not be intrusive.

To help finesse when and where it might be best for the AI to appear, it’s being tested on a variety of titles by gamers of different play styles and ages, on mobile before it comes to consoles.

Editor, occasional game dev, constant dad, horror writer, noisy musician. I love games that put effort into fun mechanics, even if there’s a bit of jank here and there. I’m also really keen on indie dev news. My first experience with video games was through the Game and Watch version of Donkey Kong, because I’m older than I look.
