Nionetix Teases Demo For Upcoming Survival Game Frozen Ship

Indie game developer Nionetix is teasing the gaming community by granting early access in August 2025 to their upcoming survival game Frozen Ship. The company is yet to release a game trailer while its website outlines a roadmap which includes DLC.

Game art from Frozen Ships suggests that the game devs have taken inspiration from games like Frostpunk (2018) and, in particular, The Long Dark (2014). A press release from Nionetix puts Frozen Ship in genres like adventure, survival, strategy, and base building.

“Every new game is unique, because we create a world from small fragments, ensuring that each time you will experience a new, remarkable adventure,” the press release said. “At the moment, the plot of the game remains the same, but everything that happens around it will change, bringing unexpected twists to the game.”

Extremely Detailed Gamelore

Detailed gamelore will often lead to better story telling, but Nionetix brings the detail to the next level in a blow-by-blow explanation of why the world is in its current state. The lore reads very much like a captain’s log and outlines all significant events dating back to 1971 when a massive asteroid hit the East China Sea region.

Subsequently, the impact altered the planet’s orbit, switched positions of the polar caps, and plunged the world into a post-apocalyptic, frozen wasteland. Small settlements in Sweden and Finland emerge only to succumb to overpopulation.

The latest known settlement is called Saint Alice. It’s kept alive thanks to an active volcano on the border between the two countries, but as it begins to cool the remaining population decides to build a ship and appoint a captain with a crew of 20 to go in search of habitable land.

This is where the journey for the protagonist and the crew begins. The mission: to find a habitable area and build a base.

Nionetix’s Debut Project

Frozen Ship is the small indie gaming studio’s first release since it was established in 2023. It has the hallmarks of an ambitious project, which will include loot and crafting, exploration, and strategy, all set in a world that’s continuously changing based on player decisions.

At this stage it looks like the game will only be available on PC when it’s released.
