PC Demo Released For Survival Horror Confronted

Build, hide, survive in the debut horror title from Grumpy Rock Studios, a solo dev based in the UK. Already drawing positive comparisons from players with cult favorites such as Amnesia and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Confronted takes place in a spooky Gothic castle as players uncover its dark secrets.

Players take on the role of Dorinela, who receives a worrying letter from her husband: he’s been imprisoned in Radu Castle, a sprawling medieval building with flooded rooms and far too many torture chambers for any normal manner of royal dwelling. Worse, monsters are roaming the halls and there’s no way to fight them.

“Build hideouts to evade the malevolent forces. Discover enemies that will force you to strategize how, when and where you build,”  the Grumpy Rock Studios press release said.

Run and Hide

Modern survival horrors can lean more into the action side of things these days, with players invariably ending up armed to the teeth. Confronted, on the other hand, focuses on surviving the horror, not blasting it in the face with a convenient shotgun.

Whether it’s hiding in lockers or under desks, there are games out there that let players be full-on cowards. Confronted goes one step further and lets players make their own hiding places, by collecting resources and quickly placing boards over the openings of crates, doorways and more.

Whether these will be enough to avoid the horrors of Radu Castle is something players will have to find out for themselves, however.

Three Chapters of Gothic Horror

The PC demo lets players explore the ruined corridors of Radu Castle and even saves their progress, should they purchase the game. Confronted is currently in Early Access, with Chapter One out now, and two further chapters to follow.

Editor, occasional game dev, constant dad, horror writer, noisy musician. I love games that put effort into fun mechanics, even if there’s a bit of jank here and there. I’m also really keen on indie dev news. My first experience with video games was through the Game and Watch version of Donkey Kong, because I’m older than I look.
