Reignbreaker, Studio Fizbin’s Final Game, Released on PC

Studio Fizbin, the developer of well-received titles Minute of Islands and Say No! More, has released a medievalpunk action roguelike, Reignbreaker, on PC. The game marks Fizbin’s swansong after the studio was acquired by publisher Thunderful, who subsequently announced lay-offs late last year.

Reignbreaker lets players step into the rebellious boots of Clef, a punky young woman set to free the land from the oppressive rule of a monarchy, in a dystopian sci-fi-meets-medieval world. Many players might be wondering how getting the game supports the devs, if this is the studio’s final title.

“The most frequent question we’ve gotten is ‘if Fizbin is winding down, does buying Reignbreaker actually help support the studio?’” the developers said on LinkedIn. “The short answer is ‘yes, it absolutely helps.’ Though we can’t get into specifics, the more successful this game is, the longer we’ll be able to sustain our team and pursue ongoing opportunities.”

Crush The Queen

Reignbreaker took two and a half years to make and merges Studio Fizbin hallmarks, like a sly sense of humor and handcrafted visuals, into an isometric action roguelike. As Clef, players can make use of a growing arsenal of motorized javelins and power-ups, as they hack, slash and smash their way through the evil Queen’s grand Bastion and its mechanized servants.

Reignbreaker embodies the punk spirit of graphic novels like Tank Girl in both its art and music. Graffiti-style paint splashes decorate the levels and the sound design includes a theme song by Norwegian metal band Djerv.

Each defeat only encourages Clef, as powers and abilities carry-over in true roguelike fashion. Players can harness her punk attitude as they rise up and deal heavy combos and flashy finishing moves.

Players have already praised the game for being “the punk-rock sibling of Hades,” and “Reignbreaker injects its own neon punk energy, doubling down on aggressive gameplay, making it feel distinct and fresh.”

Next Steps For Studio Fizbin

Although the future for Studio Fizbin’s employees is now unclear, they have promised post-launch support for Reignbreaker. The studio has also been very active on social media in terms of showing behind the scenes information on the game, so players can get a sense of how much work has gone into creating it.

Studio Fizbin launched in 2011 and has won multiple awards in that time, including the German Developer Award 2021 for Best Studio.

Reignbreaker is published by Thunderful, a company with 11 game studios under its belt. Other titles it’s published include SteamWorld Heist II, Lego Bricktales and Lost In Random.

Editor, occasional game dev, constant dad, horror writer, noisy musician. I love games that put effort into fun mechanics, even if there’s a bit of jank here and there. I’m also really keen on indie dev news. My first experience with video games was through the Game and Watch version of Donkey Kong, because I’m older than I look.
