Silent Hill f Creators Discuss the Beauty in Terror

Silent Hill f is the next installment of the Silent Hill series and is now inching closer to getting a release date. On March 13, 2025, Motoi Okamoto the series producer, spoke with presenter Chihiro Yoshizaki, in a special Transmission video as to what fans can expect from Silent Hill f.

A teaser trailer was first released for Silent Hill f in October 2022, in which it was revealed the game would take place in 1960s Japan. The Transmission video also included an official game trailer that shed more light on the setting and monsters.

“The concept for this game is, find the beauty in terror,” said Okamoto in the video. “While Silent Hill f retains the series’ core elements of psychological horror, we challenged ourselves by setting the game in Japan, and leaning into those themes.”

Silent Hill is a State of Mind

Okamoto said that to help create a truly Japanese take on horror he enlisted the help of writer Ryukishi07, who is best known to audiences for his acclaimed run on the horror manga, Higurashi When They Cry.

“Firstly, on the one hand, Silent Hill is a setting, one that has seen many memories, stories and much pain,” Ryukishi07 said in the Transmission video. “On the other hand, Silent Hill is also about portraying characters’ struggles with the evil within themselves, sin, discontent, and conflict in a visually striking way.”

He said that while this latter point informed his story for Silent Hill f, it was still important to have the town in the new game feel like a place players might recognise, especially Japanese ones.  To this end, the development team at Konami visited a real place he recommended, Kanayama, to take reference photos and record ambient sound to use in Silent Hill f.

“I chose it as the setting because you can really feel its history,” he said.

The Sound of Nightmares

The final guest on the Transmission video was famed series composer, Akira Yamaoka. When asked how he approached the music in this new installment, Yamaoka reflected on his previous work for the series.

“While I did incorporate some Japanese aspects to the music, I also wanted Silent Hill fans across the world to enjoy it all the same,” he said. “So I took a different approach, and focused on the horror elements. So much rests on drawing out what the characters are feeling, so I think when the sound and their emotions overlap, you’ll really feel that Silent Hill vibe.”
